I’ve mentioned before how much I love our local Chinese restaurant. I’ve also mentioned that as much as I love it we can’t always go there when I get the hankering for it. So, I’ve learned to do what most people do when they want something they can’t have…I learned to make it myself.
The sauce that coats this baked sweet and sour chicken is so yummy!
I used it to go over some bone-in legs and thighs that I cooked in the oven.
I basted them a couple of times while they were cooking. Then used the rest of the sauce as a gravy to put over rice.
OMG this is sooo good! Give it a try. I bet you will say the same thing.
Ingredients
- 12 chicken pieces
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 TBSP soy sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 TBSP cornstarch
- 3 TBSP water
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Lay chicken pieces on foil in a single layer.
- Bake in a 425° oven for 20 minutes.
- While the chicken is cooking combine the brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic powder and worcestershire sauce in a small sauce pot. Simmer on low for about 5 minutes.
- Combine cornstarch and water in a bowl. Whisk it into the sauce and continue simmering until mixture is slightly thickened.
- After 20 minutes remove chicken from the oven. Drain any chicken grease. Brush on one coating of the sauce mix and return chicken to the oven for 15 more minutes.
- Remove chicken from oven and drain any additional grease. Brush with sauce one more time.
- Return chicken to oven for 5 minutes.
- Serve chicken over rice using the remaining sauce as gravy.
