Here is a recipe I like to make when I have leftover sweet potatoes. The recipe (below) has you boiling whole potatoes. You definitely can if you don’t have any leftover but I like to wait until I have already cooked potatoes to make this.
Now don’t get me wrong, this sweet potato shepherd’s pie recipe is good anytime. It just takes for dawg on ever for a whole sweet potato to cook. Hence the need (for me) to wait until there are leftovers to make this.
But, by all means, if you have the time, make it from scratch. You will not regret it. It’s such a tasty comfort dish. And because it’s made with lean ground turkey there’s no fat to drain so you don’t have to cook it before you put it in the oven to cook it!

- 2 lbs sweet potatoes
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ tsp salt, divided
- ½ tsp pepper, divided
- 1 lb lean ground turkey
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp butter
- After thoroughly washing sweet potatoes, boil them, whole, until tender, about 35-45 minutes.
- In a large bowl add the eggs, garlic, bread crumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp of the salt and ¼ tsp of the pepper.
- Mix in the ground turkey.
- Peel and mash the sweet potatoes in a separate bowl. Mix in the flour, butter, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp pepper.
- Spray a 2 quart casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Spread the turkey mixture over the bottom.
- Spread the sweet potato mixture over the top.
- Bake in a 375° oven for about 40 minutes or until a thermometer inserted into the meat in the center registers 165°.
