A.K.A. Homemade “Bisquick”.
I’m pretty sure most everyone I know has their own homemade baking mix recipe. This is one of those recipes that I decided to start making after I became a stay at home mom and needed to save money on our food budget. It’s really a quick, cheap and easy way to substitute for the Bisquick you buy from the grocery store.
Just in case you don’t know or don’t have your own recipe I’m going to first share how to make your very own homemade baking mix and then over the course of the next couple months I’m going to give you between 25-30 delicious recipes using this mix. (I didn’t want to bombard you all at one time:) There will be other delicious recipes in between these!
I have recipes for every meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. They are all included in my collection.
Because I like using butter instead of vegetable shortening I have to store mine in the freezer and just pull out the amount I need for the recipe. If you decide to use shortening instead of butter you can store in an air tight container in your pantry for up to 3 months. Any longer and I’ve been told the mix will go rank.
Ingredients
- 6 cups flour, all-purpose or wheat
- 3 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp baking powder
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 cup butter, cold and cut into small squares
Instructions
- Whisk together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
- Add butter.
- Using a pastry blender, two knives, a fork, or my favorite kitchen utensils-your hand, combine butter with flour mixture until it resembles course crumbs.
- Store in an air tight container in the freezer for up to 6 months.
