Anybody else out there as tickled as I am that the seasons are FINALLY changing? I’m so ready for some cooler weather. Some people find it strange that I live in a state that is warm 8-9 months out of the year but LOVE the cold weather.
Maybe it’s BECAUSE I live in a warm state that I love the cold weather? I don’t know, I just know I’m definitely ready for what Florida considers winter:) And if ever given the opportunity to high tail it to another state way, way, way up North (Alaska, maybe?) I’m so gone.
I think I love the cold so much because of my fireplace and bowls of chili. There is nothing like sitting in front of a roaring fire with a big steaming bowl of homemade chili on a cold winters day. Nope, doesn’t get much better.
The following recipe cost me…NADA, NOTHING! You want to know why? I have all the seasonings in my spice cabinet! I stock up on all my spices a couple times a year and when I want to make a homemade seasoning recipe I just grab what I need from my spice cabinet and BAM! D.O.N.E. Do you know how many homemade chili seasoning recipes I can make with a few jars of spices? I don’t either but I know it’s A LOT.
This recipe doesn’t have any salt so that way you have complete control over your sodium intake. The flour helps to thicken it a bit. I’m not a chili “soup” kinda person. When I eat chili I want a big thick hearty bowl of the stuff.
Because some of my readers are ALREADY in what I call “chili weather” I wanted to share my homemade chili seasoning recipe. Keeping my cabinets stocked with jars of homemade seasoning is one way that I can save a bit of money. With the amount of chili we eat over the cooler months I’m not spending tons on the packets of chili seasonings from the grocery store.
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp flour
- 2 tsp chili powder
- 2 tsp crushed red pepper
- 2 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp ground cumin
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients and store in a spice jar.
- Use 1 tablespoon per 1lb of meat.
Notes
This recipe makes approximately 7 tablespoons.

Thank you. Nice to have on hand.
Your welcome Liz! Thanks for reading:)
Mmm, can’t wait to try it. Love to have seasoning mixes on hand. Now I’m going to make a batch and wait for cooler weather.
Right? I’m so ready for the weather to cool down so I can have a big pot of chili:)
You’re not the only one waiting for the cooler weather and to get a big roaring fire going in the fireplace! Even after being here for 40+ years from N.Y. I still miss the colder weather and yes, even some snow! Just a quick question, do you add the spice to the burger when you cook it or to the tomato sauce like I do? Love having pre-made homemade spices in the cabinet, I’m totally with you on this one : )
Hey Regina!
I usually do it about half and half. Remember, we usually eat lean ground turkey so there’s no fat to drain. I like to add a little seasoning to my meat when I brown it. It makes it taste a bit better, in my opinion. I usually use around 3 tablespoons of the chili seasoning, so I’ll add 1 1/2 tbsp to the meat and then another 1 1/2 tbsp when I add all the other ingredients.
Thanks Adrian, will be making some chili very soon and will have to add some to my meat when I cook it like you do, I’ll let you know how it comes out!
I hope you and Kenny enjoy it:)

Love this! We make chili a lot in the colder months. Might even try it on tacos Thanks for sharing!
We do too! And it’s awesome with tacos. I will use it if I’m out of my homemade taco seasoning and just too lazy to make a batch at the time:)
I just love making my own seasonings. So much cheaper and less processed. I would love it if you shared this (or others) link with my readers on the Yuck Stops Here link party!

I know, right? It’s soooo good! Thanks for stopping in:)
This is a great idea… I usually just put seasonings in individually – it would be handier to have it all together.
I saw you at the Weekend Re-Treat.

I’m in Canada so I’m feeling a bit of that chili weather already. Must say I do not get the cold obsession though…But thise chili seasoning makes up for it cuz I love a good chili. Thanks for sharing!

Your welcome Catherine! Love your link party.
It’s great to make your own seasonings like this. You have control over what’s going in it. So many times I read labels & I can’t pronounce half the things on the list. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Melissa! That’s what I love about making my own seasonings and it doesn’t hurt that they are a lot cheaper and take no time at all to make:)
Thanks for sharing! I’ve pinned your recipe to the Creative K Kids Tasty Tuesday board. We hope you’ll join us again tomorrow!
