My kids love a cup of nice warm cocoa topped with mini marshmallows when they are chilled. Of course, they would probably like it all the time anytime but I like to keep this drink as a treat and not as an “all the time because it’s chocolate” drink. So it’s reserved for those times that you need to sip on something good and warm on those cool days in the fall and winter.
I remember my mom making the recipe from the side of the Hershey’s Cocoa can for us on the stove when we were kids and wanted my kids to remember me making it for them after they became adults.
Well, I do make it for them just in a different way:)
My girls also know how to whip up this homemade hot chocolate mix just about as quick as I can. Now I just need to get my boys trained and they will all be able to continue on the tradition of making this delicious chocolaty homemade drink for their kids:)
Ingredients
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
- 1 cup cocoa
- 1 3.9oz box instant chocolate pudding mix
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions
- Sift all ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
- Stir until completely combined.
- Store at room temperature in an airtight container.
Notes
To make hot cocoa stir together ¼ cup homemade hot chocolate mix and 8 oz warm milk.

THANKS FOR THE GOOD RECIPE. HOW ABOUT USING SUGAR FREE PUDDING?
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CALORIES, ETC.? THANKS SO MUCH.
PAM
Hey Pam! Thanks for the comment:) You could use sugar free pudding but I’m not sure it would make much difference with the 3 cups of powdered sugar:( Do you use Splenda? I may be able to come up with a sugar free version if your interested. As far as calories go I don’t know how many are in each serving (1/4c). I’m pretty sure I don’t want to know but as I said in the post this drink is used as a treat and not as an everyday beverage. Let me know if you want me to create a sugar free version or if you have any more questions.
That would be truly appreciated. Being a Diabetic is soooo boring,
but thankful that I’m keeping it in control.
Again, thanks for willing to help. Your the best! Have a great day.
Pam
I am going to have to try this recipe. I don’t think I have made one before that has pudding mix in it – what a great addition. My boys love hot chocolate when it gets colder out.
My kids and I love it too:) I like to add the pudding mix because it gives it a richer more chocolaty flavor.
Home made hot chocolate….what could be more perfect

Looks so good! Can’t wait to try it, but I’ll have to wait until it cools down. It’s still 90 degrees here in Texas.
I made it because it got down into the forties this weekend here in North Florida and I’m just about to go nuts waiting on winter. It is so HOT this year. It’s making us mad with envy for those that have leaves turning and cooler temps every day! Thanks for stopping in:)

Thank you Terri! I like to make it for the kids to take to their teachers for Christmas. I add in some peppermint sticks as stirrers and a small baggie of mini marshmallows. It seems to be a big hit. Thanks for stopping in:)
