I started this blog back in March of this year and I CAN NOT believe I have not posted this money saving recipe to you guys until now. This homemade bag popcorn recipe has saved me tons (I mean that literally) of money over the past couple of years.
I used to buy the economy sized boxes of microwavable popcorn bags from the grocery store. At least one of those big boxes a week! My kids would eat 2-3 bags EVERY single night for their evening snack.
I now only buy a bag of popcorn kernels every two weeks and a package of brown paper lunch bags about once a month! I spend about $10.00 a month for a WHOLE months worth of popcorn. And that cost includes some butter flavored cooking spray and seasonings.
The recipe is as simple as adding a ¼ cup of popcorn kernels to a small brown paper lunch bag…
sealing with a small piece of scotch tape…
and tossing it in the microwave for about one and a half minutes.
Once that’s done, spray a little cooking spray over it (or you can drizzle with melted butter), sprinkle with desired seasonings (I like Cajun or Ranch), shake and enjoy!
Or you can be like my kids and pour it into a bowl. I mean why not dirty up a dish instead of just throwing away a bag?
Ingredients
- ¼ cup popcorn kernels
- 1 small brown paper lunch bag
Instructions
- Pour popcorn kernels into bag.
- Microwave on high setting for approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds. (Times will differ with different watt microwaves. I have an 1100 watt microwave.)
- Coat popcorn lightly with cooking spray or melted butter.
- Sprinkle with desired seasonings.
- Give it a good shake and enjoy!

A little kosher salt, LOTSA butter, a good movie and I’m good to go! This is such a good way to make popcorn……………Gotta love It! Guess your kids really love popcorn, wow!!!
Popcorn is their go-to snack…you know the “I’ll just eat popcorn because mom won’t go-to the store and buy us junk food” type of thing:)
Awesome Adrian. So much better than the store bought bags. I like the bowls too, but usually when it’s my daughter’s dish night :)x
Thanks for sharing!
Pinning it!
That is an awesome tip and I loved the Cajun idea, will definitely try it next time, thanks.
I love popcorn that doesn’t follow the traditional butter and salt mix. The Cajun seasoning is really good! I hope you enjoy:)
Great recipe! My boys are popcorn fanatics and I’ve heard about the paper bag method, but wanted to see how it is done. Can’t wait to try it out and I love the ideas for different seasonings. My boys would eat popcorn every single night too if I would let them!

Popcorn is one of our favorite snacks in our house! This is a great way to make it easy and good portions! (AKA so I don’t eat it all before the kids can!) (Stopping by from Teach Me Tuesday.)
I know what you mean Aubrey! I usually just grab a handful from each bag (luckily I have small hands:) so I won’t eat more than I should!
Such a smart idea! I’ve been just making it on the stove since the store bought aren’t that great for you. This looks so much easier!
I love popcorn. How easy to make and less expensive than buying micowave corn. Great idea!
I liked this idea so much. Well done with that
I LOVE the taste of “homemade” popcorn vs. the prepackaged bags. I like that you control how much salt and butter is on there and adjust those for different tastes. I love my popcorn salty with a little butter and my husband is the exact opposite. I never thought of cooking it in a lunch sack in the microwave though. I’ll have to try it
Love your idea! Super simple and delicious! Thanks for sharing on the Monday Funday Party!
I”ve been making popcorn on the stove. I didn’t know I could make homemade popcorn in a bag!
Yep, you sure can. And I’m here to tell you, it’s sooooo much simpler doing it in the microwave:)
This is SUCH an amazing idea. I’ve stopped eatting bagged popcorn because I read there were bad chemicals in those store bought bags – but now I can go back to making EASY popcorn! x thanks!!
What a great idea, I am heading to the kitchen to try this one. Thanks so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday and have a great day!
Come Back Soon!

This is my favorite way to eat popcorn now! Let me know how your turned out!
We do this at our house too! My kids like to put buffalo wing sauce on their pop corn…oh and dirty up a bowl too
Thanks for sharing on Merry Monday.
That’s awesome. I LOVE buffalo wings but I NEVER would have thought to eat the sauce over popcorn. I’m gonna try it tonight! Thanks for sharing that:)
Awesome idea! We usually make these in a pan with some sunflower oil, but a microwave is much faster !
Thanks for sharing
I’ve done this in the past. So good. Pinned to the Creative K Kids Tasty Tuesday board. Thanks for linking up.
Ain’t it awesome? Thanks for stopping in and pinning!
